Face-Degree Bounds for Planar Critical Graphs

چکیده
The only remaining case of a well known conjecture of Vizing states that there is no planar graph with maximum degree 6 and edge chromatic number 7. We introduce parameters for planar graphs, based on the degrees of the faces, and study the question whether there are upper bounds for these parameters for planar edge-chromatic critical graphs. Our results provide upper bounds on these parameters for smallest counterexamples to Vizing’s conjecture, thus providing a partial characterization of such graphs, if they exist. For k 6 5 the results give insights into the structure of planar edge-chromatic critical graphs.

Class 1 bounds for planar graphs
There are planar class 2 graphs with maximum vertex-degree k, for each k ∈ {2, 3, 4, 5}. In 1965, Vizing proved that every planar graph with ∆ ≥ 8 is class 1. He conjectured that every planar graph with ∆ ≥ 6 is a class 1 graph. This conjecture is proved for ∆ = 7, and still open for ∆ = 6. Let k ≥ 2 and G be a k-critical planar graph. The average face-degree F (G) of G is 2 |F (G)| |E(G)|. Let...
متن کاملSharp Upper bounds for Multiplicative Version of Degree Distance and Multiplicative Version of Gutman Index of Some Products of Graphs
In $1994,$ degree distance of a graph was introduced by Dobrynin, Kochetova and Gutman. And Gutman proposed the Gutman index of a graph in $1994.$ In this paper, we introduce the concepts of multiplicative version of degree distance and the multiplicative version of Gutman index of a graph. We find the sharp upper bound for the multiplicative version of degree distance and multiplicative ver...
متن کاملOn the M-polynomial of planar chemical graphs
Let $G$ be a graph and let $m_{i,j}(G)$, $i,jge 1$, be the number of edges $uv$ of $G$ such that ${d_v(G), d_u(G)} = {i,j}$. The $M$-polynomial of $G$ is $M(G;x,y) = sum_{ile j} m_{i,j}(G)x^iy^j$. With $M(G;x,y)$ in hands, numerous degree-based topological indices of $G$ can be routinely computed. In this note a formula for the $M$-polynomial of planar (chemical) graphs which have only vertices...
متن کاملThe Degree/Diameter Problem in Maximal Planar Bipartite graphs
The (∆, D) (degree/diameter) problem consists of finding the largest possible number of vertices n among all the graphs with maximum degree ∆ and diameter D. We consider the (∆, D) problem for maximal planar bipartite graphs, that are simple planar graphs in which every face is a quadrangle. We prove that for the (∆, 2) problem, the number of vertices is n = ∆ + 2; and for the (∆, 3) problem, n...
متن کاملOn the Fiedler value of large planar graphs (Extended abstract)
The Fiedler value λ2, also known as algebraic connectivity, is the second smallest Laplacian eigenvalue of a graph. We study the maximum Fiedler value among all planar graphs G with n vertices, denoted by λ2max, and we show the bounds 2 + Θ( 1 n2 ) ≤ λ2max ≤ 2 + O( 1 n ). We also provide bounds on the maximum Fiedler value for the following classes of planar graphs: Bipartite planar graphs, bip...
